A Closer Walk With

Here is an unusual example of a perfect Jazzistry-style blend of history, art and jazz. This rare, independent film is a story of time and farewells. Starring Vincent York, it reveals hidden gifts and shadows of the past. Filmed prior to the MI Central Train Station’s rescue by the Ford Motor Company (in 2018), it is a memorable double portrait. By Yi Cui, former UM student, JAZZistry volunteer and film student at York University (no relation) in Canada. Yi, an award-winning filmmaker, now teaches at Colgate University. When she learned that the glorious building has since been saved from the wrecking ball she said, “Perhaps the magic of music has something to do with this wonderful resurrection.”

We are proud to screen the first volume of JAZZistry’s Oral History Project, a series with interviewer Linda Yohn. Vincent describes his unique childhood, early influences and how his research for JAZZistry began when he was in high school. Filmed in the Blue LLama Jazz Club, Ann Arbor. Approximately 40 minutes, with a 5 minute intro to JAZZistry from our first video. Captioned.
